This has been an on going thing. After about half an hour of driving the sound of my engine changes. It sounds almost like a giant fan and loses the ‘throaty’ sound. If I get back up to speed it usually goes away by 30 mph or so and the engine sounds returns to normal. There no squealing or ticking or dentist drill sounds. I guess the closest thing could be a window A/C unit. I suspect it has something to do with the temperature of the engine. The engine seems to run at a normal temperature and performance doesn’t really change at all. i just did an oil change and it didn’t make any difference. The temperature doesn’t jump up if I stop either.
The next repair which I plan to do later this month is the secondary air injector pump. I would love to have that fix this issue too but I doubt it. I’m still on the fence on if I want to keep it or not but I might as well keep it alive while I have it.
I just passed 177k miles. You want to make tow truck jokes please go somewhere else. I’m going to go DRIVE home now. Thanks.

i dont think its something turning on and off. It seems to gently fade with speed

It’s twin turbo?
![]() 06/14/2016 at 16:04 |

yes it is. from what I understand, the turbo issue is a high pitch sound. this might be more like a vacuum cleaner.

Hard to pin it based on your description...
1) let your car idle for a while and make sure cooling fan kicks in. If that’s not the noise, then keep looking
2) is it possible you have danger to your manifold? Your exhaust manifold gets hot, expands, creates a leak and causes that noise... when it cools down a bit, it contracts and stops making that noise? inspect manifold for cracks?
3) if all else fails, turn up the tunes and ignore.

lol #2 i thought u were just making a bad F&F joke but your are and arn’t at the same time. I’ll have to think on that one but it it doesn;t have the burble of an exhaust leak,

It wasn’t a joke. More of a nod to F&F. Did you have this problem in the winter - assuming your winter is my north east winter? Meaning was it making this noise when it was cold out?

I think what you're describing is the injector pump. I just had mine replaced a month ago. Eventually it will seize and throw a CEL, but won't affect performance. It's just annoying as hell.

So you say you hear it at low speed, but it goes away at higher speeds? In that case I think it could be the fan which is cooling the engine which is being slowly shut down, since the driving wind is increasing.
But that is just my 2 cents. Anyhow I hope it isn’t a problem, or at least an easy fixable one if it is.

Some Hondas have vacuum cleaner in trunk. Check yours and make sure it’s off ;)

Step one:
I know, not a 2.7t, but too good to pass up.

I bet your radiator’s cooling fan is on its last legs.

You driving the tow truck?

It sounds like a fan to me too, maybe check on replacement fans? I’m sure there’s about 100 audi forums you could ask, maybe record the sound?

Who neds mor than one friend when you have a Miata

Fan clutch kicking in? The 2.7 is a hot box so that could explain it kicking on and off based on temps which speed directly affects.
I haven’t had a clutch fan in over a year (EFK), but I do know that they’re loud as hell. You should notice that there’s more load on the engine too (rotational drag if you will)

That Outback needs moar WRX motor
![]() 06/14/2016 at 22:08 |

yeah - that almost sounds like a bad fan clutch, (like on older Vortec 4.3s.)
![]() 06/15/2016 at 06:19 |

wouldn’t you still hear it going on and off at higher speeds?
![]() 06/15/2016 at 08:09 |

Nooooooope. The WRX is a fun car, but it’s no Miata.

It’s no Miata!

Unless it’s stuck on all the time after it warms up maybe? And you just can’t hear it above 30mph?
